Bach´s 335th birthday celebration at the Koethen Prinzenhaus

The Concert

On March 21, in Koethen we traditionally present a concert to celebrate Bach's birthday. In 2020, it was the first time the concert couldn't talke place due to the lockdown. Instead of, there was a livestream organised presenting music from and chats about Johann Sebastian Bach. This night of Bach perfectly illustrates the "shock" about the situation of the first lockdown, even although nobody had an idea of what was about to come. So, this concert is a document of an era already now.

The Programme

Johann Sebastian Bach

Fantasy and Fugue in A minor BWV 904
Prelude from Suite BWV 1006a
Allemanda from the Partita No 4 in D major BWV 828

(spoken word parts in German only)

The Musicians

Luise Enzian, harp
Christine Schornsheim, harpsichord

The Hall of Mirrors

The Hall of Mirrors in Köthen Palace, which reopened in 2018 after extensive renovation, is impressive not only because of its 720 mirrors and 1,050 tiles on the ceiling, but also because it is the premiere venue for the Brandenburg Concertos.

The Church of St. Agnus

In the church of St. Agnus, one follows Johann Sebastian Bach's paths, for it was here that he attended services and took part in Holy Communion. Even today, the chalice from which Bach drank is used for communion.
